Why Scarsdale chimneys need more than a quick sweep

Much of Scarsdale was built between the wars: Tudors, stone Colonials and brick houses with two, three or four fireplaces, often all feeding one large masonry stack. Those chimneys are nearly a hundred years old. The brick is usually sound; the mortar, the clay flue tiles, the crown and the flashing are where the trouble starts.

  • Several fireplaces and a boiler sharing one stack, each needing its own flue checked
  • Original clay flue tiles cracked or missing after decades of fires
  • Mortar washed out of joints on tall stacks above slate and tile roofs
  • Crowns cracked by freeze-thaw, letting water into the chimney and the attic
  • Leaks at the flashing where the chimney meets an old slate roof

What we do

Chimney services in Scarsdale, NY

Every job starts with a camera and ends with photographs. Anything beyond the agreed scope gets quoted before it happens.

Chimney Sweeping

Creosote and soot cleared from every flue and smoke chamber, with drop cloths down and a HEPA vacuum running. Houses with several fireplaces get each one swept and photographed.

Chimney Inspections

Camera inspections of each flue with a written report and photos. Level 2 inspections for home sales, which matter in a town where most chimneys are older than the buyers.

Learn more

Chimney Liners

Stainless steel liners for cracked clay flues and for gas boilers and water heaters venting into old masonry. Sized to the fireplace or appliance, with a lifetime-rated liner where it fits.

Learn more

Masonry Restoration

Repointing in mortar that matches the original, brick and stone replacement, and crown rebuilds. We aim for repairs that blend in on a historic house, not patches that stand out.

Learn more

Caps, Crowns & Flashing

Stainless caps for single and multi-flue stacks, new crowns, and flashing repairs where the chimney meets slate, tile or shingle roofs.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Full-length lint removal and airflow testing, including the long runs through older houses where the laundry was added later.

What we found in each flue, and what should be fixed now versus what can wait.

Questions we get every week

Straight answers

Our house has three fireplaces. Do you check all of them?
Yes. Each fireplace has its own flue, and in older Scarsdale houses they often run side by side in one big stack. We sweep and inspect each one and tell you its condition separately.
Our chimney is almost 100 years old. Does it need a liner?
Not always, but often. The original clay tiles in many 1920s chimneys are cracked or have gaps at the joints. A camera inspection shows whether yours are intact. If not, a stainless liner sized to the fireplace or appliance is the usual fix.
Can you repoint without making the chimney look patched?
Yes. We match the mortar colour and joint style to the original and replace damaged brick or stone with the closest match we can source, so the repair blends into the house.
Water is getting into the room next to the chimney. What causes it?
Usually a cracked crown, a missing cap, worn mortar joints or failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof. On slate and tile roofs the flashing is a common culprit. We find the source before quoting a fix.
Do you do inspections for home sales?
Yes. A Level 2 inspection — a camera run up every flue plus a check of the accessible parts of the chimney — with a written report and photos for your attorney, home inspector or insurer.
How often should we have the chimney swept?
NFPA 211 calls for a yearly inspection, with sweeping when the inspection shows it’s needed. Fireplaces used through the winter usually need a sweep every year.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the house. One fireplace and a four-flue stone stack are very different jobs, so we quote after seeing it. The quote comes before the work and doesn’t change afterwards.
